Designed for a Icon Magazine Italia column by Cristina Di Canio dedicated to books, featuring an interview with Gianluca Gazzoli centered on the themes of his latest book, "Anche quando nessuno ci crede".
The artwork envisions an impossible meeting inside the BSMT, bringing Gianluca together with several icons featured in his writing. These figures, whom we now recognize as giants, were first and foremost underdogs. They were individuals capable of setting out on their journey at a time when the path was completely obscured and no one and sometimes not even themselves could yet see where it was leading. This project was about capturing that specific moment of uncertainty and the raw determination required to move forward regardless.
Before arriving at the final artwork, I explored three distinct visual directions to translate the underdog spirit into an editorial layout. The first concept, "The Outsider’s Lane," was a geometric, top-down view of a track field where the winner bypasses the standard lanes to finish on the grass, serving as a metaphor for unconventional paths to success. The second concept was "The Literal Under-dog," depicting a high-stakes photo finish at a greyhound track, where a stray dog outpaces elite competitors, contrasting raw hunger with established privilege.
The third concept, "The Basement Legacy," presented a pop celebration of the BSMT community, gathering the book’s protagonists around the iconic podcast table for a definitive, resilient crossover. Ultimately, this third direction was selected for its direct connection to the author's narrative and its strong iconographic impact.
